Redesigning a classic ballpoint stick pen with 50 years of heritage.

The chosen concept embodied the modern, precise, and controlled attributes through a pill shape clip and flush cap to body proportion.
In this line up of final concepts, multiple geometries were explored, all channeling different aspects of the Brand VDL and heritage.

Paper Mate Write Bros

The original Paper Mate Write Bros model was introduced in 1971, making the design quite dated in 2020. The old design was declining in sales and the product seemed mismatched to an updated design language seen in both the Ink Joy Gel and Flair pens.

A major goal of the redesign was to maintain a similar production cost to the original, while updating the entire pen assembly. This was achieved by designing surfaces that could be molded in the same fashion as the original pen. Our manufacturing team was even able to modify the old production tools to accommodate the new design, saving millions in tooling costs for the business, and enabling the project to hit the financial targets.

Recognized and awarded in 2020 by Good Design, this product builds on the reputation of reliability and durability of the original while greatly improving aesthetics and comfort.
